Governance

As part of the Active Learning Trust, our school has taken an exciting step toward reshaping governance.

In 2025, the Active Learning Trust took an important step to reshape governance so it better supports our school, our pupils and our wider community. At the heart of this new strategy is a simple shift in mindset - Governance is no longer considered a layer of bureaucracy or compliance for its own sake; today, it focuses on stewardship and creating the right conditions in which our school, staff, and pupils can thrive. This approach helps ensure better decisions, stronger accountability and a clearer understanding of what is really happening in our school.

As part of this work, Local Governing Bodies are now known as Local Trust Committees (LTCs). This name change reflects our belief that local governance should be clearly anchored within the wider Trust, working alongside Trustees as committees of the Trust Board, in the same way as the Standards Committee or Audit and Risk Committee do. What our LTC brings to this connected governance community is essential local insight. They help ensure that the lived experience of our pupils, staff and families is heard and understood, and that our school remains deeply rooted in the community we serve.

Our Local Trust Committee helps bring local insight into governance across the Trust. It focuses on the things that matter most to our school, including:

  • Community
Ensuring that the voices of pupils, parents, staff and the wider community are heard and understood.
  • Celebration
Recognising success and championing the achievements of pupils, staff and schools.
  • Inclusion and Safeguarding
Keeping a close eye on how well schools support all pupils, particularly those with additional needs, and ensuring safeguarding culture remains strong.
  • Panels
Supporting fair and robust decision-making through participation in panels such as suspensions, exclusions, stage 3 complaints and other formal processes.

LTC members take on Champion roles in key areas and act as stewards, gathering insight and ensuring all the voices of our school community are heard. These include:

  • Safeguarding Champion
  • Inclusion & SEND Champion
  • Staff Voice Champion
  • Parent Partnership Champion
  • Community Engagement Champion
  • Pupil Champion

Through Champion roles and pupil voice, Local Trust Committees act as a bridge between the school, its community and the Trust, helping ensure governance is informed by real experience as well as data.

Our LTC Members

Members of the Local Trust Committees are volunteers who give their time, experience and local knowledge to support their schools. Their role is not to duplicate the work of Trustees, but to act as stewards of culture, community and context, helping the Trust Board make well-informed decisions about the future of our school.
